Twitter exodus: company faces bleak future as top executives flee

Twitter is facing new uncertainty as a result of a growing exodus of top management and reports that mass layoffs and major platform changes are on the way. The company's advertising and marketing executives, as well as the chief people and diversity officer, the general manager for core technologies, the head of product, and the vice-president of global sales, have all announced their departures. Elon Musk fired the CEO, Parag Agrawal, the CFO, Ned Segal, and the head of legal affairs and policy, Vijaya Gadde, shortly after taking over the company last week. Sarah Personette, the chief customer officer and ad boss who had expressed interest in working with Musk, resigned on Tuesday, adding to advertisers' uncertainty about how the social media company will change under its new ownership. Dalana Brand, the chief people and diversity officer, announced her resignation last week in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday. Nick Caldwell, the general manager for core technologies, confirmed hi...

The Parkland school shooter has been sentenced to life in prison.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland school shooter, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Wednesday, after the families of his 17 victims spent two days berating him as evil, a coward, a monster, and a subhuman who deserved a painful death. Cruz, shackled and dressed in a red jail jumpsuit, showed no emotion as Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer handed down 34 consecutive life sentences, one for each of the 17 people killed and injured in the Feb. 14, 2018, massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in suburban Fort Lauderdale. The judge's voice broke as she read the first sentences, but as she moved down the list, she gained strength and volume. Scherer had no other option when it came to sentencing Cruz; the jury in his three-month penalty trial voted 9-3 on Oct. 13 to sentence him to death, but Florida law requires that sentence to be imposed unanimously. Scherer made no comments about Cruz that were not legally required. Instead...

Fed raises rates but hints at a pullback

The Fed raised its benchmark interest rate by three-quarters of a percent for the fourth straight day Wednesday but signalled it may soon reduce rate hikes. The Fed hiked its short-term rate to 3.75 to 4%, the highest level in 15 years. It was the central bank's sixth rate hike this year, raising mortgages and other consumer and commercial loans and the risk of a recession. The Fed said it may soon increase rates more slowly. It said it will assess the cumulative impact of its rate hikes in coming months. It observed that rate hikes slow GDP and inflation. The Fed's policymakers may think high borrowing costs will slow the economy and limit inflation. If so, they shouldn't hike rates as quickly. Inflation and increasing borrowing costs are hurting American households and limiting Democrats' ability to campaign on the employment economy as they strive to keep control of Congress. In the run-up to Tuesday's midterm elections, Republicans have pounded Democrats on inf...

Biden warns that "ultra MAGA" Republicans will lead the United States down a "road to chaos."

Washington— President Biden warned Wednesday about challenges to American democracy, urging voters to reject "extreme MAGA" Republicans who undermine voting faith. The president, who has portrayed Republicans as extremists dedicated to Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement, blamed his predecessor for an assault on democracy that Biden said led to political violence. "American democracy is under threat because the defeated former president won't accept the results," Biden stated. "We're all voting on democracy" Biden linked the recent attack on Paul Pelosi, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Assailant asked Paul Pelosi, "Where's Nancy?" "That's how the mob stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6," Biden added. Federal officials say David DePape broke into the couple's San Francisco home to break Speaker Pelosi's kneecaps. Biden warned that a GOP wi...
